Obtaining Info & Records: Tools to Assist You in Requesting Information

The City provides several tools and resources to assist you in preparing your request for information and  records.  If you know which department maintains the information you are interested in, contact that department directly.  If you are not sure which department maintains the information you are seeking, you can use the records retention schedule or alphabetical listing of city services as finding aids.  If you need additional assistance, please contact City Center (510) 981-CITY (2489) and someone will help refer you to the appropriate department.

  • Department Contact Information
If you know which department maintains the information you are interested in, contact that department directly.
  • Records Retention Schedule
The City of Berkeley’s Records Retention Schedule identifies records maintained by each department of the city.  Each schedule was prepared in consultation with individual departments.  We inventory city records and update the schedule with new information periodically.  The schedule identifies retention periods for each type of record and whether the record, based on retention criteria, is likely to be located in off-site storage.  Please contact the City Clerk Department with any questions or assistance needed navigating the City’s Records Retention Schedule.
  • Records Online
Berkeley Records Online is a Web-based resource that allows users to access City documents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Alphabetical Listing of Departments and Services
Another way to locate information and records you are seeking is to review the city services directory to identify department functions and programs and contact that department with your request.
  • Additional Assistance Requesting Information or Records
If you have a general idea regarding the information you are interested in obtaining and need assistance narrowing your request, please contact the City Clerk Department and someone will help direct you to the appropriate department.
