CHIEF HAMBLETON RETIRES; INTERIM CHIEF NAMED
Berkeley, California (Thursday, September 24, 2009) - Police Chief Doug Hambleton, who has lead the Berkeley Police Department for almost five years, officially retires at the end of this week.
Hambleton has a Bachelor's degree in Social Welfare and a Master's degree in Management, and has been a part of the City of Berkeley since becoming a police trainee in 1975. He was hired as a patrol officer the next year. Since then, he has worked a variety of assignments within the department, including being a part of the Hostage Negotiations Team and the Budget Unit. He even spent a year as an Assistant to the City Manager, where he direct the Coordinated City Service Task Force.
“It’s been a real pleasure to work with Chief Hambleton all these years,” said City Manager Phil Kamlarz. “He is committed to law enforcement, but even greater is his commitment to safe neighborhoods. He has always worked with the neighborhoods, City staff, and the elected officials to find solutions to community problems.”
At his last Berkeley City Council meeting as chief, the Mayor and Council presented Hambleton with a proclamation, commending him for his years of service. Among other highlights of his service, they noted that he:
• “has dedicated his professional life to the safety and security of the people of the City of Berkeley, routinely working nights, weekends, holidays, and sacrificing time with his family because of his dedication to the job and commitment to the citizens of Berkeley; and
• “played a key role as the Project Manager for the implementation of Community–Involved Policing for the Berkeley Police Department; and
• “has always made service to the citizens of Berkeley his highest priority.”
The process of selecting the next chief of police is ongoing. Effective Friday, September 25, 2009, the Interim Police Chief for the Berkeley Police Department will be Captain Eric Gustafson.
Cpt. Gustafson is a 28-year veteran of the Berkeley Police Department, having worked his way up through the ranks in a variety of assignments over the years, including serving as one of the Department’s first Area Coordinators. He will serve as interim chief until a selection has been made and approved by the City Council.
