SUPPORT HAITI RELIEF EFFORTS
Berkeley, California (Friday, January 15, 2010) - The Berkeley community is deeply concerned and saddened by the devastation caused by the recent 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti. As the world mobilizes to aid the many thousands of victims affected by this disaster, members of our community have expressed interest in how to assist with relief efforts. Please click here for information on how you can donate to the relief efforts.
Please also note that two members of Berkeley’s Fire Department have already been deployed to assist with relief efforts in Haiti: Michael Sullivan, Firefighter/Paramedic was dispatched as a volunteer member of the Disaster Medical Assistance Team 6 to Haiti to assist with disaster medical response, and Seth Zweben, Firefighter/ Paramedic was sent as a member of the California Air National Guard 131st Rescue Squadron.
With the earthquake in Haiti fresh in our thoughts, this is a reminder of how vulnerable we are living in our own seismically active region. We encourage all of you to use this opportunity to update and refresh your family and car emergency supplies and safety plans to sustain you for at least one week. Please review the City’s suggested planning and emergency supply guidelines for information on disaster preparedness.
The Berkeley community keeps the people of Haiti in our thoughts as they work to recover from this terrible tragedy.
