UNION PACIFIC RECONSTRUCTION WORK IN BERKELEY
Railroad Crossing Closures
Berkeley, California (Thursday, January 21, 2010) - Union Pacific (U.P.) Railroad is scheduled to start reconstruction work along their tracks in the City of Berkeley beginning the first week of February 2010 to be completed in two to three weeks, barring unforeseen problems or weather conditions. The project includes replacement/repair of existing railroad ties, repair/installation of new overlay at crossings, pavement work, and installation of flangeway fillers on the two mainline tracks. This project is funded and will be carried out by U.P. The City of Berkeley will provide traffic control during the reconstruction work.
There are seven U.P. railroad crossings in Berkeley. The work will start sequentially from Gilman Street to the north, and will end at Bancroft Way to the south. Due to the nature of the repairs complete street closures at the crossings are necessary on a 24-hour basis. One crossing at a time will be closed for approximately three to five days. No traffic will be allowed across 3rd Street, at the railroad crossing, during the closure. Work hours will be on a 24/7 basis from Monday - Sunday. Traffic may also be delayed at the work site and surrounding area. Detour signs will be placed to guide traffic to alternative routes. Neighborhood parking will not be affected, all other parking restrictions, including no parking for street cleaning, will be in effect. Some equipment noise is to be expected during the reconstruction work.
