NIGHT ENDS EARLY FOR ROBBERY SUSPECTS 3 ARRESTED

Berkeley, California (Thursday, April 22, 2010) - The City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) arrested three suspects in connection with a series of armed robberies that occurred within a few blocks and minutes of each other.  Outstanding work by BPD patrol officers and a great spot by a University of California, Berkeley Police Department (UCPD) officer proved invaluable in nabbing these armed suspects.  The three robberies happened on Monday night April 19th.

In each of the cases, the suspects confronted the victim with a handgun, searched their pockets, and demanded all of their belongings.  A BPD dispatcher broadcast a description of the suspects and a possible involved vehicle.  A vigilant UCPD officer, who was monitoring the BPD police radio, spotted a vehicle matching the broadcast description.  The officer saw the vehicle traveling in the area of Ellsworth Street and Dwight Way, just a few blocks away from the armed robberies.

Officers stopped the car and detained the three occupants.  Evidence collected at the scene led to the arrest of Bailey, Doty, and Coulter, Jr.  Each was booked into the BPD jail for three counts of PC 211 (Robbery) and three counts of PC 496 (Possession of Stolen Property).

On Tuesday, April 6, BPD alerted the community of an armed robbery series in North Berkeley.  In addition to the above three robberies, Detectives say the arrest of these three provides closure to 5 North Berkeley robberies. They are responsible for a total of 8 armed robberies, which is currently being reviewed by the Alameda County District Attorney’s office.  Investigators shared, “The Berkeley streets are now safer knowing these suspects who were menacing our community are now in-custody.”  No doubt BPD and UCPD officers ended the night early for this armed robbery team.
