Welcome to Network Administration

Over 1,200 City of Berkeley computers are linked via a complex, sophisticated wide-area network, allowing users to send and receive e-mail, schedule meetings, share information, browse the Internet, and access a wide variety of legislative and financial systems. The most visible and immediately accessible Network support comes from our Help Desk. Behind the scenes, a number of technical staff are dedicated to enhancing the network and making all systems function smoothly.

As our network grows in size and complexity, the tasks associated with ensuring efficient operations also increases. There are dozens of servers, switches, hubs, gateways, and other equipment configured and continuously monitored to keep downtime at an absolute minimum. Senior technical staff often work nights and weekends to perform tasks that must be done when network traffic is low.

Network staff communicate with the entire City to stay informed about problems and to provide solutions as they arise. Information Technology staff look ahead and plan for the future and design solutions that enable the City of Berkeley  to provide effective information and technology services to its employees and citizens.
