Benefits and Compensation
The following is a list of general benefits applicable to City of Berkeley Police Officer employees:
City employees are included inthe California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). REtirement formula is either 2.7% at age 57, or 3% at age 55 depending on the individual's eligibility. The employee pays a tax deferred member contribution of 9% to the CalPERS pensions and the contribution is reported as an "employer pick-up" under Internal revenue Code Section 414(h)(2); and employees pay 1.5% of the employer rate in FY13 and 3% of the employer rate in FY14.
The City contributes 2% of the employee's salary (up to a maximum annaul salary of $32,400) into a 401(a) Supplemental Retirement Income Plan account (SRIP). The City is not a member of Social Security, therefore only the Medicare portion is deducted from employees' salaries.
10% for Field Training Officers, 2% Intermediate POST Certificate, & 2% Advanced POST Certificate
5% premium per month
Employees may contribute up to the maximum allowable by law
HEALTH & DENTAL:
The City provides full health and dental coverage for employees and eligible dependents including domestic partners. The City does not participate in the CalPERS Medical Program (PEMHCA) but does offer it’s own retiree medical benefit.
City-paid life insurance coverage - $100,000
Two to six weeks of vacation earned annually (accrual based on years of service).
Thirteen regular paid holidays and three floating holidays annually.
Employees earn twelve days of sick leave annually.
4/10 & 3/12 Work Schedule:
Four day ten hour work shift or three day 12 hour shift.
City-paid discount on YMCA membership.
