Our Department

Many members of the City of Berkeley Police Department (BPD) are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We deliver police services to the City of Berkeley in a variety of ways. You may see a beat officer in a black and white patrol car, an officer on foot, officers riding bicycles or motorcycles throughout the city or officers speaking to community members or business owners about safety tips or crime prevention for their neighborhood or business district. Another Patrol CarYou may see a Parking Enforcement Officer (PEO) towing an abandoned car or you call and talk to one of our Public Safety Dispatchers or other professional staff about an issue, request or be reporting a crime over the phone.

We are proud to recognize that members of the Berkeley Police Department reflect the diversity of the community. We are mothers and fathers, single and married, older and younger and come from a variety of different backgrounds. There are quite a few members of BPD that have chosen policing or professional work within the department as a second career and have life experience in previous careers such as Teaching, Real Estate, Social Work, Architecture, Law, Psychology and Media. (merely a sampling.) In addition, members of BPD are an educated group, many holding degrees in a number of disciplines.

BPD currently has 170 sworn Officers of all ranks and 270 employees in total - sworn and professional staff. Annually, men and women of  BPD have been honored with a variety of awards,  in addition to being accepted into some prestigious schools, Master Instructor trainings and leadership programs. A majority of members of BPD are in the ongoing process of career development and attend both mandated trainings and those that are in areas of his/her interest.

Each year, members of BPD volunteer their time and money to "give back". They accomplish their generosity in a number of special ways, within the City of Berkeley, in the cities where they live... and beyond. Some of these endevours include BPD's own Turkey Ride,  BPD's Holiday basket distribution,  Special Olympics, Toys  for Tots and the Berkeley Combined Charities Campaign. A group of cyclists have participated in the AIDs LifeCycle for several years, (see pic below) one who has been on the ride every year since it was created. In addition, members have run, walked and cycled for AIDS, Breast Cancer, Diabetes, Organ Donorship, as well as given their hair for "Locks of Love." Members continue to explore new and creative ways to give back.
