Captain Erik Upson - Operations Division
Erik Upson grew up in Washington State. He served in the U.S. Army and Army National Guard. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of California, Berkeley and his Master’s Degree from California State University, Long Beach.
Captain Upson was hired by the Berkeley Police in 1998, and has served in the Traffic Bureau as a Motorcycle Officer, in the Community Services Bureau as an Area Coordinator. After being promoted to Sergeant he served in the Special Enforcement Unit, and in the Patrol Division as a Patrol Sergeant, and as the Bike Detail Sergeant, Reserve Director, and Special Events Manager. Promoted to Lieutenant, he served as a Watch Commander and as Commander of the Traffic Bureau. Throughout his time in these assignments he served in an ancillary capacity in the Crowd Management Team (CMT) as a team member, training coordinator, and then team leader. He also served in the Barricaded Subject Hostage Negotiation Team (BSHNT) as a team member, team leader, and then as a team commander.
Captain Upson is a graduate of the California Commission on Peace Officer and Standards and Training (POST) Master Instructor Development School and POST Command College. He is the Operations Division Commander.
