Captain Cynthia Harris - Professional Standards Division
Captain Cynthia Harris grew up in Berkeley and attended Berkeley Public Schools. She began working at the Berkeley Police Department when she was 15 years old, having been assigned there when she attained employment through the City of Berkeley summer job program.
Captain Harris became a police officer in 1984 and has risen to the rank of Captain, being the 2nd woman in the history of the department to hold that rank. She has served in various positions throughout the police department including the Operations and Investigation Division.
She previously served as the President of the Berkeley Police Association, having been the only woman to serve in that capacity. She also has served as the president of the Black Police Officers’ Association.
Captain Harris is currently the division commander of the newly formed Professional Standards Division.
