Docent Training Program (Bay IT)
The Bay Interpretive Training Docent program (Bay IT) trains volunteers to help lead educational programs for children and adults at the Berkeley Marina.Training are ongoing with a new program each month. A formal, fun, hands-on training and teaching experience for docents happens October through August. We train for a program, teach that program to kids, then train for the next program.
If you are interested, please fill out the application and send it in. Docents are now required to have a current T.B. test and be fingerprinted. We will pay for the fingerprinting and give you paperwork when you sign up. So don't wait! Start the process! Working with us will be really fun and educational!

Most asked questions:
Could you describe exactly what I would be doing?
The trainings allow you to first experience the education program as a student - you get to learn interesting background information on all the topics, then you experience the hands on learning stations where we teach you how to interact with the students.
When the school classes begin in November with the fish program, you will assist with the setting up of the room, listen to the background of the class, watch and listen to them answer questions during the overview. Then after the break you will run one of the 4 hands-on stations, interpreting the wildlife and or walking tours, and being part of the wrap up when we discuss the challenges and highlights we had with that day's class and suggest ways for improvement.
Programs we teach include Birds, Fish, Marine Mammals, Bay Scientist, Intertidal and Dock life, and Sailing. Each individual is unique and we try to work with you so you are comfortable.
You can also assist on weekends during our monthly shoreline clean-ups, Bay Festival, Adventure playground and during Burrowing Owl season. You're guaranteed to have fun, and to learn and share lots of information.
What days and times do you need me?
The trainings are Thursdays and Fridays 9-12 The school groups and summer Marine biology classes come midweek (Wed- Friday) from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00p.m. You do not need to sign up for every school class program but you need to come to the docent trainings and at least two classes. I really love the out of doors but have never taught children. Will this program help me learn to teach? Yes, when you begin the training in October we give you specific instructional techniques for the variety of ages we work with here. Throughout the course, we review before each class what works best with that age group. Naturalists teach the main class, you will help run a station, and work with small groups of children.
I have just moved to the Bay area. Will your program teach me about the local ecosystem?
Yes, you will learn about the dynamic ecosystem that is the San Francisco Bay Estuary; more specifically you will learn about its birds, fish, marine mammals, and the tide pool life found here at the marina. You will have the opportunity to see the Bay from a sail boat .
I just discovered this program and have missed some of the trainings. Do I have to wait until Oct 2018 to start?
We train interested individuals throughout the year. You can come and watch us teach first and see if it is for you. We can give you background materials and train you as we go. Just ask! Any interested individuals are welcome to be part of our program.
How much does this great training cost? The cost is $62.00 which includes not only the 16 training sessions or over 51 hours of instruction, but the training manual, the name tag and a boat trip. What a deal- School was never so good!
Offered Saturdays to the general public, includes tour of the Nature Center and the Marina. Third Saturday are our Shoreline clean-ups and we can use your help with those also. Specific programs can be requested by groups. We are very popular with birthday parties, Scouts, and Camp Fire groups.
