Berkeley, California (Friday, October 04, 2013) - Low humidity and strong winds have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag warning for the East Bay hills. Residents are urged to avoid using power mowers or other machinery that create sparks.  The red flag warning extends into Saturday morning.

As a precaution, the Berkeley Fire Department has staffed an extra engine company to patrol the Berkeley hills on Friday and Saturday.

Due to the high fire danger, no barbecue grills or open fires will be allowed in Berkeley parks this weekend, from Friday October 4 through Sunday October 6.

Residents are also reminded that October 6th to the 12th is Fire Prevention Week and all should take the time to change their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
