Community Preparedness and Engagement Program
The vision of the Community Preparedness & Engagement Program is to engage and empower youth and community residents in Berkeley’s underserved communities with emergency preparedness education and resources, and leadership skills.
What services does the program provide?
This Program is funded by local Measure GG tax proceeds to engage and train the community residents of Berkeley’s underserved neighborhoods in emergency preparedness, in collaboration with the City of Berkeley Fire Department and Office of Emergency Services. Primarily, this Program will train and identify leaders whose organizations and networks have existing relationships within these neighborhoods. The Program is responsible for developing and delivering disaster preparedness information and education tailored to these populations, in collaboration with community groups.
In addition, the Community Preparedness & Engagement Program aims to provide and/or implement the following activities:
- Provide community leaders and groups in Berkeley’s underserved communities with preparedness education and training tools to enable them to develop family and neighborhood emergency plans and roles
- Recruit young adults (ages 18-25) and train them as “preparedness ambassadors” to deliver preparedness education and co-coordinate preparedness trainings and activities in underserved neighborhoods
- Foster leadership development and capacity-building in the youth and community leaders in Berkeley’s underserved communities
The “preparedness ambassador” model will provide the youth interns with experiences and educational opportunities that promote both emergency preparedness and community organizing/leadership skills. Additionally, interns will be provided with intensive leadership and professional development training that will ultimately steer them in selecting a professional career pathway.
