In the Office – Legislative Assistants

Amelia Lopez, an Oakland resident, first came to the Bay Area in 2007 to attend Mills College in Oakland. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy in 2011 and a Masters in Public Policy in May of 2012. Before coming to the District 5 office, Amelia worked as a Field Representative for former Assemblymember Nancy Skinner. Her passions include helping people understand how to navigate the bureaucratic process, advocating for better services and transparency, and working to close gaps in equity for children, youth and women. In her free time, Amelia loves to discover new places and new eats. On the weekend, you will often find her checking out the local farmer’s market, cooking at home, or enjoying the beautiful weather at one of the various East Bay Regional Parks. Amelia can be reached Monday through Friday by calling the office at (510) 981-7150 or by email at

Beth Gerstein can be found part time in the District 5 office. She works on a variety of special projects, does policy research, and tends to any questions, concerns, and issues that constituents share. Initially acquainted with the District 5 team a few years back to conduct a resident survey on affordable housing, she had too much fun to leave. After many years of involvement with the Berkeley schools Beth is thrilled to combine her experiences with her academic expertise to benefit Berkeley’s children and youth. She also sits on the City’s Children, Youth, and Recreation Commission. Beth and her wife of over 25 years, Karen, have two kids who have attended Berkeley public schools (one currently at Berkeley High) and several cats.
