|Department Selection Interview:
Once the eligibility list is established, a select number of candidates will be invited to participate in a Department Selection Interview. The Fire Department may select candidates from any category, but typically they first look at Category 1 (90-100%) candidates.
The Department Selection Interview is a structured oral interview conducted by a panel of sworn fire department members. Each applicant is asked the same set of questions; the questions generally address your preparedness for the position of firefighter/paramedic. In addition the interviews allow the fire department to learn about the candidates' background, skills, qualifications, education, experience and interests.
Interview questions may be based on the following topics; the Berkeley community, city and/or department goals & priorities, city/department demographics and vital statistics, personal community service experience, personal ethics and morals, prior fire/EMS experience, job preparation, motivation, inter-personal skills, problem solving and critical thinking and education background.
An interview typically lasts 20-30 minutes, candidates should arrive at the exam site several minutes before their schedule interview time in addition to allowing adequate time for parking. A parking garage and the Downtown Berkeley BART Station are both located several blocks away,
Some candidates who successfully complete the Department Selection Interview will be invited to participate in a Chief's Interview & Paramedic Skills Assessment.
