Mayor Tom Bates

Mayor Bates was elected in November 2002 and re-elected in 2006, 2008, and 2012. In addition to serving the people of Berkeley, Mayor Bates also serves on four regional boards: the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission and the Joint Policy Commitee. He is also a member of the Alameda County Mayor's Conference. (Full Biography)

Calvin Fong, Chief of Staff

Calvin currently serves as the Mayor’s Chief of Staff and is also the point person for transportation, land use, and housing policy development. Calvin also staffs the Mayor on the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and the Bay Conservation and Development Commission.

Calvin is a Berkeley native and holds a BS in Business Administration and a MBA degree in Finance, both from CSU Hayward. 

Sbeydeh Viveros-Walton, Senior Aide  

Sbeydeh Viveros-Walton serves as the Mayor’s Senior Legislative Aide and is the lead policy advisor for education, health, community services, and relations between Berkeley Unified School Districtk, the University of California, and Peralta Community College District. She is currently working to implement the 2020 Vision for Berkeley’s Children and Youth and increasing post-secondary success for young adults by working with community service providers and partners. Sbeydeh leads and manages Mayor’s Office special events and also staffs the Mayor on the Mayor’s Innovation Project and the Berkeley FILM Foundation

Sbeydeh received her Master's in Public Administration from San Francisco State University with an emphasis on Urban Administration and received her BA in both Rhetoric and Ethnic Studies from UC Berkeley.

Gregory Magofña, Legislative Aide

Gregory's work spans from managing the office's administration and the Mayor's calendar to working on constituent services and economic development initiatives. Gregory staffs the Mayor on the East Bay Green Corridor, the Berkeley Startup Cluster, and issues surrounding Telegraph Avenue, including student relations.

Gregory holds a BA from UC Berkeley in Political Science and has a minor in French.  

Charles Burress, Assistant to the Mayor

Charles serves as the press contact for the Mayor’s office and works on issues relating to climate change and sustainability, including green transportation. He also works on local development topics and assists the Mayor in his various roles on regional agencies.

 Charles covered Berkeley for a number of years as a reporter and editor for the San Francisco Chronicle and AOL Patch. He received an undergraduate degree in Government from Harvard and a Master’s in Journalism from UC Berkeley.



The Mayor's Office benefits from the services of dedicated interns and volunteers. Duties include planning events, creating materials, programmatic research, community outreach, answering phones, and working with volunteers.
