The Parks Recreation & Waterfront Department is looking for volunteers! Berkeley has welcomed individual and group volunteers for many years. Members of the community have dedicated hours of service to our city by volunteering at special events, parks and activities, which help promote a sense of community, by bringing people together to make this city a wonderful place to live, work, and play.

Event volunteer duties may include: Greeting patrons, giving directions and providing general program information, staffing display table, assist with move/set up tables, chairs, canopies and signage, monitor children’s activities, litter clean up before, during and after event. May require long periods of standing, walking or sitting.
- Compost Day - Last Saturday of the month February thru October (3rd Sat in July) @ 7:30am; we work to distribute compost to Berkeley residents at the Meadow Lot along Marina Blvd south of the Doubletree Hotel. If interested, please call 510-981-6731.
- Bay Interpretive Training Program - The first session starts in October and training continues until June. Volunteers learn creative ways to excite children about the out of doors with an emphasis on the San Francisco Bay. Each month are two days of training on a topic, then we work with the students on that topic. Topics include: Fish, Birds, marine mammals, Bay Scientist, intertidal and sailing. - Shoreline Clean-ups - The Third Saturday each month meet at the Shorebird Park Nature center where you will learn more about the impact of trash - specifically plastics, on the marine environment. If interested, please call ( 510) 981-6720 or email us a firstname.lastname@example.org.
Community All-Crew Days can help with your project! Residents can propose a landscape/maintenance group work project that can be accomplished in one day. At these approved events, urban forestry, parks facilities and landscape maintenance staff, join community volunteers to perform their project or spruce up City parks, landscaped medians and trees.
