Berkeley Housing Authority

Welcome to the Berkeley Housing Authority site at the City of Berkeley, CA.

Established on December 20, 1966, the Berkeley Housing Authority administers approximately 1,939 subsidized rental-housing units through the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program and the Moderate Rehabilitation SRO program. The Berkeley Housing Authority also owns and manages 75 units of public housing.    It is the mission of the Berkeley Housing Authority to enable our clients to become self-sufficient and economically independent through delivery of housing assistance and other related services. Enable elderly and disabled persons to achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency, and to live independently within their economic resources. Encourage short-term reliance on housing assistance for able-bodied family members by promoting economic independence and self-sufficiency, participation in education, training or job development activities designed to lead to self-sufficiency in return for the housing assistance.  And  require personal responsibility for the economic consequences of family decisions. The Housing Authority provides this assistance without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, family status, natinal origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability status.

Housing for Homeless Disabled Individuals - BHA operates a small (98 unit) Single Room Occupancy Moderate Rehabilitation Program that offers safe, decent, single room “(SRO)” housing for homeless disabled individuals.  The units are located in two propeties:  UA Homes located at 1040 University Ave, and Erna P.Harris Courts, located at 1330 University.  The interest for Erna P. Partnership with Children’s Hospital - BHA is engaged in partnership with Children’s Hospital.  As a result of this new collaboration, BHA makes periodic presentations to interns on assisted housing programs, equipping these new doctors with information they can share with the parents of their patients as they provide medical treatment.  The first of many sessions was held in February 2010 and continues to meet on a quarterly basis.  We are excited about the opportunity to be a part of the health care solution for our community’s most valuable assets, our children.
