Public Hearings     |     City Council Agendas & Summaries

Public Hearings for October 2, 2001 include:

1.      REDISTRICTING

The Berkeley City Council will be conducting public hearings for the purpose of redrawing City Council district boundaries based on the 2000 census figures. The Berkeley City Council will conduct public hearings on September 25, 2001 and October 2, 2001 to review any and all redistricting proposals submitted by members of the public or councilmembers.

Redistricting proposals were required to be submitted to the City Clerk no later than August 15, 2001. Copies of these proposals will be made available in the City Clerk Department and will be posted to the City’s website at www.ci.berkeley.ca.us by September 4th.
The Council is expected to review and take testimony on the submitted plans at the Council meeting on Tuesday, September 25, 2001 starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 2134 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The Council will hold a second public hearing on Tuesday, October 2, 2001 also to be held in the Council Chambers starting at 7:00 p.m.

As part of the public hearing process, the Council may direct staff to present alternative proposals and/or may modify any submitted proposal. At the close of the public hearing on September 25th, the Council is expected to give direction to staff related to one preferred redistricting plan and may direct staff to further modify the plan and prepare maps and/or analysis. A second public hearing has been scheduled for October 2, 2001 to take public comment on the preferred plan. At the close of this public hearing the Council is expected to approve a plan and direct staff to prepare a Redistricting Ordinance for adoption at the Council meeting of October 9th.

Anyone wishing to speak at either public hearing may obtain a speaker card from the City Clerk at the start of the Council meeting up until the close of the public hearing.

Written comments may be mailed or delivered directly to the City Clerk, 2180 Milvia Street, Berkeley, CA 94704; e-mailed to
clerk@ci.berkeley.ca.us; or faxed to (510) 981-6901. Comments received no later than noon, on Monday, September 17th, and on Monday, October 2nd, will be included in the communication section of the agenda packet for each meeting. Comments received after these dates will be submitted to the Council as supplemental communications and be distributed to the Council at the meeting. If the communication includes maps or photos or any other material that is not easily reproducible on a copy machine, 20 copies should be provided to the City Clerk.
