San Pablo Park Turns 100 Years Old When: 11:00 AM –6 PM, August 25, 2007 Berkeley, CA – San Pablo Park, the oldest of
Berkeley’s parks, will be celebrating its 100th birthday on
Saturday, August 25th. The
City of Berkeley, the San Pablo Neighborhood Council and the San Pablo
Park community have come together to honor San Pablo Park and celebrate
its centennial with a festival that includes live entertainment, food,
community information booths and activities for youth and adults.
Highlights of the day include a knock-out performance by Pete
Escovedo and his Latin Jazz Orchestra, Asheba, and presentations of the
much anticipated community mural and the Frances Albrier Plaque as
interpreted by renowned Berkeley artist/historian, Donna Graves. “It is great to be able to celebrate the 100-year
anniversary of San Pablo Park and still see that it is as vibrant and
active as ever,” said Councilmember Darryl Moore.
“This park is a testament to how vital open space is to building
community.” San Pablo Park was purchased
by the City of Berkeley from the West Berkeley Land Company for $31,687 in
1907. It was the first significant piece of open space that has
been integrated into neighborhood development. Since San
Pablo Park was established as part of a larger planning effort, it has
always served as cornerstone for the surrounding community that has
historically been home to a multi-ethnic mixture of middle and working
class families and immigrants. The park often served as a hub
for political and social awareness. It
was one of the
few welcoming places for African Americans to play sports, home to the
National Negro leagues when they played in the San Francisco Bay Area in
the 1930s and 1940s. San Pablo Park is also the
home and namesake for Berkeley’s first neighborhood council, San Pablo
Neighborhood Council, who was instrumental in gaining access for local
residents to the tennis courts and in protecting the Park from having a
segregated school sited there. To
reflect the long history of activism inherent in this community, the
recreation center at San Pablo Park is named in honor of a longtime
activist, Frances Albrier, who led various civil rights efforts from her
home in Berkeley for over fifty years just a few blocks away. Please join the City of Berkeley, the San Pablo
Neighborhood Council and the San Pablo Park community in celebrating the
100th birthday of San Pablo Park on the 25th. All are welcome and admission to the event is free.
