COUNCILMEMBER MOORE GIVES

ROSA PARKS’ STUDENTS A JUMP-START

WHEN: MONDAY, AUGUST 29TH AT 5PM AT

WHERE: ROSA PARKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

(920 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA)

On Monday, August 29th the Rosa Parks Parents and Teacher Association (PTA) will be holding a “Welcoming” picnic for new attendees to Rosa Parks Elementary School. First impressions are always critical, so to start the school year off right Berkeley Councilmember Darryl Moore will be distributing backpacks at the picnic, printed with the Rosa Parks emblem, packed full of school essentials and other goodies.

“Being that this is the only school in my district, I wanted to do something really special,” says Moore.  “It’s always a stressful and daunting experience for young children to come to a new school for the first time.  I wanted to make sure that their first day was something that they would look forward to.  This year teachers will be able to look out onto a sea of ‘Rosa Parks’ backpacks and smiling faces.” Moore came up with the backpack idea knowing that school supplies often mean the difference between success and failure for some students, and began soliciting donations. He received donations from the West Berkeley Business Alliance, Bayer HealthCare and Cody’s Books. Glad for an opportunity to partner with Moore on the project, these donors have long been supporters of Rosa Parks School.

Rosa Parks Elementary has always held a special place in Councilmember Moore’s heart. Working with his mentor Margaret Breland, he has been involved with the Rosa Park’s Collaborative for several years.  Education has always been a priority to the Councilmember and involvement with public schools is nothing new to Moore; he ran for Berkeley School Board in 1998 and served as a Peralta District Trustee for four years.

Many of Rosa Parks families will be meeting Pat Saddler, their new principal for the first time. Saddler has served Berkeley students as principal at LeConte Elementary School for the past six years, and looks forward to doing the same at Rosa Parks.
