Geospatial Informatics and Systems

"Geo" suggesting earth and "spatial" suggesting an arrangement of objects in space form one word describing what is sometimes called "geographic information".  "Informatics" is information science, particularly as applied in the interactive applications produced by this unit.

Geospatial technology has been used for many years. This web page provides access for residents and visitors to many of  the internal capabilities developed by City of Berkeley. The offerings linked through this page fall into four general categories:

  • Static maps that you may either view on screen or download in a file format convenient for printing (usually pdf).
  • Interactive map services that use standard GIS navigation tools and a consistent interface with layers or map extents chosen to meet the needs of the particular service.
  • Report generating applications using GIS technology as one means to the end of providing you with the answers to specific questions such as "what is the building permit history for 2180 Milvia Street?".
  • GIS Layers:  We intend to make certain City of Berkeley GIS layers available for download through this site so that they can be used within your own GIS environment.

The links below present our current offerings, and others continue to be developed.  Please share any ideas for other  tools that would be particularly helpful to our community please contact us with your thoughts. Questions regarding GIS in the City of Berkeley may be directed to:
