Berkeley,
California (Wednesday, September 5, 2001)
– The
City of Berkeley is continuing its efforts to improve your parking
experience at Sather Gate Garage.
You will notice new elevators to serve you, improved
lighting, and a new pay system that allows you to pay when you
return to the garage only for the time you actually were parked in
the garage. We also
have a new rate structure (see below) that encourages
short-term parking so you can count on finding a space in the garage
on most days when you visit Telegraph Avenue and the campus.
We’ve
also upgraded the garage’s parking validation program and now have
over 50 local merchants and sidewalk vendors participating in the
program. When you
make a purchase at these participating establishments, you will
receive a validation voucher that will discount your parking fee by
50%. We appreciate your
patronage of this parking facility. Lists of merchants and vendors
participating in the validation program are in the MALL LOBBY by the
CASHIERS. If you have any questions or comments, please call
Steve Paskowitz at 981-7223 or email stp1@ci.berkeley.ca.us.

Are

will pay no more than $4.00.
Why
are parking rates higher?
Parking
rates are higher to encourage short-term parking and discourage
long-term and all-day parking.
When
does the new system go into effect?
September
17, 2001
Why
did the system change? Why
were the gates reinstalled?
The
Dynameter parking system didn’t work.
It couldn’t take new bills or coins.
It didn’t give change.
You had to guess how much time you would spend in the area
and pay in advance. If you came back late you received a parking ticket.
The merchant validation program was so cumbersome that few
merchants participated.
With
the new system you pay only for the amount of time spent in the
garage. There are both
automated pay stations and cashiers.
You have 15 minutes to exit the garage after you pay.
Once you have paid and returned to your car, when you get to
the exit gate you insert your paid ticket and the gate opens.
Quick and easy exit.
How
and where do you pay for parking?
When
you park your car, take your ticket with you.
When you shop, be sure to ask for a validation voucher with
purchase over $5.00. When
you are ready to return to your car, automated pay stations and
central cashiers are located in the mall.
