Berkeley,
California (Friday, June 6, 2003)
– The Berkeley Skate Park at 5th
and Harrison Streets will re-open on Saturday, June 7th.
The City has cleaned and tested the skate park to assure that
Chrome 6 contaminated water infiltration occurring last winter will
not affect the use of the facility during dry weather.
The
City has also retained a geotechnical consulting firm to determine
why the groundwater has penetrated the skate park despite a design
that should have prevented this situation.
In addition, this firm will propose long-term solutions to
prevent such an event from happening in the future.
The results of this study will be available in approximately
two months.
Earlier
tests of the Gabe Catalfo Playing Fields adjacent to the skate park
found that these fields were not affected by the contaminated
groundwater and are safe for use.
For
information concerning the Berkeley Skate Park, call the City of
Berkeley Parks Administration office at 981-6700.
