Berkeley,

– The City of Berkeley
is pleased to announce the inaugural celebration of the
International Marketplace, a unique commercial district in the heart
of West Berkeley featuring cuisines and specialty items from around
the world.
The ceremony will be held on
Friday, September 12, at 11:00 a.m. at the Spanish Table market,
located at 1814 San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley. Visitors
will be provided International Marketplace guides to the
district’s many restaurants, shops and markets.
“The
International Marketplace is an extension of the City of Berkeley
itself,” said Weldon Rucker, Berkeley City Manager. “Our
diversity has always been our strength, and the International
Marketplace is representative of our tremendous cultural
resources.”
The
International Marketplace is comprised of merchants in the area of
San Pablo and University avenues and features over 70 business
including eight markets and grocery stores, 10 restaurants, and a
variety of retailers offering music, clothing, and unique items from
around the world. Most
significantly, the marketplace features one of the highest
concentrations of specialty restaurants in the Bay Area offering
products foods and products from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Mexico,
the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, Thailand, and the Middle East.
“The
International Marketplace offers a world of opportunities in our own
backyard,” said Steve Winston, proprietor of The Spanish Table. “Those
looking for cultural adventures and unique culinary experiences can
find them here.”
