Berkeley,
California (Thursday, September 9, 2004)
– Times of India: The
Woman and the Goddess is seen in this collection of paintings on
view at the Addison Street Windows Gallery from September 5- October
12, 2004.
The
exhibition displays the art of Indian women artists from the
Madhubani District, a rural setting in India and Shiraaz Bhabha a
contemporary Indian women artist living in the USA, putting their
art on a common creative platform with varying sensibilities grown
from Indian soil. The opening reception is on Friday September 10 at
7:00 PM. This event is open to the public, free, and wheelchair
accessible.
The
Madhubani district holds the rich tradition of Maithili art, where
the painting traditions has flourished with the women painting their
colorful renditions of folklore. These Maithili paintings of Hindu
Goddesses are in gouache on hand made paper.
They combine select aspects of a 3000 year old traditional
ritualistic art with inspirations and personal innovations of the
women artists.
Juxtaposing personal context, traditional symbols and elements of
pop culture, the mixed media paintings by Shiraaz Bhabha explore the
constant struggle between materialism and spirituality.
The narrative paintings contemplate the choices and
influences that accompany the lifestyle of a modern Indian woman.

Addison Street Windows Gallery is a project of the Civic Arts
