In the city’s second homicide of the year, a Berkeley man was shot and killed in West Berkeley on Sunday night, police said.
The man was identified as 24-year-old Keith Stephens by the Alameda County Coroner’s Office yesterday, said Deputy Coroner R. Brighton.
Berkeley police responded at about 7:10 p.m. to reports of a shooting on Carrison Street near San Pablo Avenue and found Stephens with a single gunshot wound to an unspecified part of his body, said Berkeley police Lt. Daniel Lee.
The first police officers to respond attempted to revive Stephens until paramedics arrived, said Berkeley police Officer Ed Galvan. Paramedics were unable to save Stephens’ life.
The coroner’s office could not provide the exact time that Stephens was officially pronounced dead.
Police say the killing was probably not gang-related, but were unable to comment on what details from the shooting made them believe gang involvement was unlikely.
"We do not think the case is gang-related," Lee said. "It’s just the way our detectives feel about how our initial investigations are shaping up."
Police have not identified any suspects or motives for the killing, Galvan said.
Investigators from the Berkeley Police Department’s homicide division are in the process of interviewing possible witnesses and examining the area where Stephens was found, Galvan said.
