Welcome to a Step By Step "HOW TO" Tutorial
Follow these simple instructions with accompanying screens
to learn how to best use your new community crime mapping tool. 

Step #1

This is your Welcome and Disclaimer page. 
Once you review it, Click "I Agree"

Step #2
This is a brief  text version of how to use the Community Crime View 
program. This step by step How To tutorial will cover the information 
on this page, then click Next .

Step #3
Familiarize yourself with the crime classifications listed on this page. 
Choose the crimes you are interested in viewing on your Community 
Crime View map. Once you are satisfied with your selections, 
click Next as shown. 

Step #4
Community Crime View offers you a variety of choices on this 
"Select A Location" page. Decide your area of interest/search. 
The first choice is Near an Address. Perhaps you are interested in 
knowing the incidents happening near your home, apartment or place 
of work. You also have the option of entering an intersection by typing 
the street name and cross street name. example-San Pablo Ave. 
& University Ave. 

Step #5
Another choice on this "Select a Location" page is  Near a Feature. 
This page gives you a variety of interesting choices of features or 
landmarks in the City Of Berkeley including schools, building and parks.

Step #6
The last choice on the "Select a Location" page is Within a Boundary. 
This option allows you to pick from a BPD police beat or a City Of Berkeley 
Council District. Once again, after your selection, click Next.

Step #7
Now that you have made your location choice, either Near a Address,
Near a Feature or Within a Boundary, you can chose a distance 
from the address, feature or intersection from 500 feet to 1 mile. 
Click Next to move on.

Step #8
Community Crime View offers you an opportunity to select a time frame 
for your search. We strive to give you the most current information. Bear 
in mind that Community Crime View captures crime incident data directly 
from the Berkeley Police Department's Computer Records Management 
System (CADS) which generally is complete for 3 -7 days prior to today. This number 
varies depending on holidays and other factors relating to BPD data entry 
functions. The data on Community Crime View maps is updated daily. 

Step #9
So far in this process, you have learned to select the crimes that you are 
interested in, the location/area of your interest and the time period you are 
interested in searching. You are very close to obtaining the results of your 
Community Crime View mapping search. Click Next. A pop-up like 
message will appear to tell you that your map is loading. (as shown below.)

Step #10
You have now successfully completed a search. The screen shown below is just 
one view of a map search and reflects a great deal of data. Additional tools on 
the top left portion are for your use in navigating your map. Depending of what
 tool you chose, you are able to get a variety of point of views within your search. 
If you wish to start another search, return to WHAT to begin your new search.

Each small colored symbol or icon on the Community Crime View map 
reflects a crime incident. Familiarize yourself with these crime incident 
icons. For a list of the icons and their corresponding crimes, click Legend. 
You can toggle the Legend on and off by clicking in the area shown.

Step #11
Community Crime View gives you further options to view details of an 
incident. View Detail  gives a Summary Report of crime incidents 
within your map. Summary Reports provide you a list of crimes and 
the numbers of incidents  in each category.

Step #12
Again click View Detail to get a Detailed Incident Report.  This 
feature shows you the dates, times, BPD case (incident) numbers and the 
numbered block that the incident took place. Exact addresses are not 
reflected in order to preserve some measure of confidentiality. It should 
be noted that the positioning of crime incident icons on the map are not 
intended to reflect an incident to have occurred on any particular parcel. 
It is intended to reflect a general location within the block.
