Motive A Mystery
in Berkeley Hills Murder

Berkeley, CA. – On Monday March 17, 2003 at approximately 3:26pm, Berkeley
Police Officers were called to a home in the 1300 block of Glendale Avenue.

A man dialed 911 after he had let himself into the house with a key, and found his 37-year-old male friend, Andre Byes, dead inside. Preliminary information provided by BPD Homicide detectives who responded to the scene confirm that Byes was shot multiple times with a large caliber weapon, there were no signs of forced entry to the house, and it appears that Byes had let the suspect (s) in who killed him. According to the Alameda County Coroner’s Office, an exact time of death was not determined, but evidence suggests to them that the man was murdered between 4 -7 days ago.

At this time, there are no known motives or identified suspects.

This latest murder is Berkeley’s second for the year 2003. On January 14 of this year, Ronald Easily, 19, was found shot in the 1600 block of Harmon Street in southwest Berkeley. The investigation into Easily’s murder is still ongoing, and a $15,000 reward
is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person (s) responsible for that case.

Anyone with information on either of these cases, please contact the BPD Homicide
detail at (510) 981-5741.
