Detectives Arrest Triple Homicide Suspect in 25-year-old Case
Berkeley,
California (Wednesday December 7, 2005) – On Saturday
December 3rd, US Customs arrested Edward Michael Mills
as he entered the United States on a Berkeley Homicide Warrant.
This case stems from
the triple murder that occurred on February 26th 1980.
In this case the Edward’s parents Al and Jeannie Mills
and his younger sister Daphene were found shot dead in their home
at 2731 Woolsey St. Edward,
who was 17 at the time, was home when the shootings took place.
He was unharmed and claimed that he was unaware that the
murders had taken place.
The initial
investigation revealed gunshot residue on Edward’s hands,
however at the time there was not enough to make an arrest.
Approximately 2 years
ago this case was reexamined as part of Berkeley Police Department’s
ongoing efforts to review existing evidence in open cases with a
focus on using new investigative methods and technology to help
solve the cases. Based
on this approach, investigators were able to obtain an arrest
warrant for Edward Mills for the 1980 murders.
As Mills returned to the United States he was arrested on
this warrant. Investigators
have submitted the case for the District Attorney to review.
