Woman Raped While Exercising in Aquatic Park

Berkeley, California (Monday May 23rd 2005) – On Sunday May 22nd at approximately 6:00 o’clock in the evening a 17 year old female was walking in North Aquatic Park when she was attacked by a suspect described as:

A Hispanic male between 35-40 years of age, approximately 5’6” tall and 180 lbs.  The man had shoulder length black hair and was wearing a black baseball cap and white t-shirt.

The suspect grabbed the victim from behind and dragged her into nearby bushes where he forced the victim to disrobe and then sexually assaulted and raped her.  The suspect then fled the park and the victim called police.

At this point in the investigation it appears that this is an isolated case.  Detectives are pursuing a number of investigative avenues and the Department has dedicated additional police officers to patrol North Aquatic Park an effort to identify a suspect and locate potential witnesses.

Anyone who has any information about this case is urged to call Berkeley Police Department’s Sex Crime Detail at 981-5735.  People may also email tips to police@ci.berkeley.ca.us People who provide information may remain anonymous.
